Reading Service For Kids Strikes a Deal On Shark Tank!

On Shark Tank last Friday, Felix Brandon Lloyd and Jordan Lloyd Bookey pitched their company called ZooBean. ZooBean is a children’s book platform and service that connects the right books with the right children. Felix and Jordan asked for $250,000 for 15% equity in their company.

Both Felix and Jordan were teachers before they left their jobs to work on ZooBean full time. They came up with the idea to curate apps and books for individual child. This encourages literacy and helps parents give their children a head start.

Kevin, a.k.a Mr. Wonderful, said that acquiring a customer at this age is a real test and there are a lot of people who move through the zone at that age. They only have 85 subscribers. Kevin doesn’t know if they will be able to get there with this business. He goes out because the customer acquisition cost is too high. Mark tries to figure out what is the real gold in this. They say that it is matching the tags with their data. Mark thinks that the business is a success, and that it is not just books.

Barbara said that she doesn’t think that there is a big need for the business. She goes out. Robert doesn’t see the business functioning today. He goes out.

In the end, Mark decided that he will make an offer of $250,000 for a 30% stake in the company. They counter down to 25% which Mark agrees to so they accept. If you or anyone you know has an invention idea and needs help with it, please contact us at New Product Consulting.

Ilumi Solutions Lights Up Shark Tank!

The shark tank at the National Marine Aquarium...Last Friday on Shark Tank, Corey Egan and Swapnil Bora pitched their company, Ilumi Solutions. Their product is intelligent LED light bulbs which can be controlled from a wireless device. They asked the Sharks for $350,000 for 15% equity in their company.

Cory and Swapnil stated to the Sharks that they are in the final stages of development. They created a light bulb that cost $90 but it lasts up to 20 years. This system allows you to control all the lights in and around your house from your phone.

Robert pried at them and soon discovered they are selling a system not just a bulb. They have 6 utility patents pending on the product. Robert sees room in the high end light bulb market. Kevin thinks this can easily fall into a licensing deal. The money they will be given gets the product into the costumer’s hand. Lori is concerned in regards to competition, and says that they can’t be competitive if they don’t get the IP.

In the end, Robert put a deal on the table for $350,000 for 35% equity in the company then ended up dropping out as he realized the market is not as large as he thought. Mark offered $350,000 for a 25% stake in the company. Cory and Swapnil immediately took that deal.

Once a company finds the right investors anything is possible. If you or anyone you know has an invention idea or small company and need help, please contact us at New Product Consulting.

The Sharks Strike A Deal For U-Lace!

The shark tank at the National Marine Aquarium...Tim Talley walked into Shark Tank last Friday to pitch his product and company, U-Lace. This product allows people to change the complete style of sneakers with lace colors to change patterns and styles. U-Lace began with a single product, U-Lace Sneaker Customizing Laces, but the brand is on course to become so much more. Tim was asking the Sharks for $200,000 and a 25% stake in his company.

Tim gave a pair to each of the Sharks. They sell a pack for $3.49 and it costs 35 cents for each pack. They have a  global distribution network and they make 50 percent on it alone. They made $193,000 dollars in sales in 4 years.

Kevin right away accused the product of being a brief trend that won’t last forever. Lori is not a fan and goes out. Robert loves the pitch and story about focusing on the important things in life, but he goes out. Daymond owns another company that he just acquired which would be competition for his.

In the end, Kevin offers $250,000 dollars for 50% equity which was double the initial offer equity.  Mark Cuban steps in to offer $200,000 for 35% equity which Tim accepts on the spot. If you or anyone you know has an invention idea and needs help, please contact us at New Product Consulting.

Inventors: First Inventor To File Forum By USPTO!

Official seal of the USPTO

A public forum will be hosted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office on the one year anniversary of the First Inventor To File provision.

First to file changed the law for inventors in the United States meaning that the first inventor to file for a patent will own the rights to the product, not the first to come up with the idea and prove it.

This measure makes it imperative that all inventors protect their product with some form of a patent before they begin any process of showing to individuals or companies. The forum will be held Monday, March 17, 2014, at the USPTO headquarters, Madison Auditorium, in Alexandria, Virginia from 12:30 to 5 pm ET.

Here is some information from the USPTO website:

“The forum is intended to bring stakeholders together with USPTO subject matter experts to discuss the FITF provisions.  It will begin with a thirty-minute informal meet-and-greet session, allowing participants to chat with the experts, followed by an informational program covering the following topics:”

.               Review of FITF filings made to date

.               Explanation of whether/when an application will be examined under

                 the FITF statutory framework

.               Overview of the FITF statutory framework and tips on responding to

                 prior art rejections

.               Tour of the AIA (FITF) website

.               Q&A panel discussion

If you or anyone you know has an invention idea and needs help protecting it, please contact us at New Product Consulting.
